Seven Types of Common Water Filters

Water purification is the process of removing impurities like undesirable particles, solids, and contaminants from water to make it fit for various purposes like drinking, making medicines, and so on. 

1) TAP FILTERS

These are also known as faucet-mounted filters. Very aptly named, tap filters are directly attached to the faucets. Though they are inexpensive, easy to install, and can remove chlorine from water, these filters are not very effective as they can process only about a 100 gallons of water, after which they need to be replaced. Moreover, they are less efficient in regions where dissolved salt content is high.

2) SHOWER FILTERS

Similar to tap filters, these are directly attached to the shower heads. If you do not want a whole house filter, you can opt for shower filters which will enable you to use chlorine-free water for bathing, thus preventing any damage to skin and hair.

3) ULTRA FILTRATION METHOD:

UF method is similar to RO system in the sense that both use a membrane for the purification process. The main difference between UF and RO method is that the membrane used in UF method has bigger pores. It does not have the capacity to separate dissolved salts from water.

UF system can be used when the water has less dissolved salts and low TDS.

4) ULTRA-VIOLET PURIFICATION:

This method uses the ultra-violet rays to kill/remove impurities like bacteria, viruses, germs, etc. from the water. This method is simple yet effective as it is said to destroy around 99.99% of the harmful organisms. UV method is generally combined with other water purification systems like the RO system, as it simply kills the microorganisms but does not remove them completely.

5) REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM:

It is the most popular and widely used method of water purification. ROs work on the concept of membrane technology. They use a semipermeable membrane to purify water. This membrane has very tiny pores (only slightly larger than water molecules) which allow only water to flow through, thus leaving back unwanted sediments and dissolved salts.

It is advisable to use Reverse Osmosis System in regions known for hard water and high Total Dissolved Salts (TDS).

6) ACTIVATED CARBON FILTERS:

As the name suggests, this system uses activated carbon to remove contaminants from water. It has the potential to remove impurities, pesticides, and chemicals like chlorine. These are easy to install, relatively less expensive, and do not require electricity to operate.

7) WHOLE HOUSE WATER SYSTEM:

This is also known as Point of Entry System (POE system). Like the name clues you in, a whole house water system filters water before it enters your house so that you get clean water flowing from all your faucets. It reduces all kinds of impurities; solids, sediments, chemicals, pesticides, etc., even before they have a chance to harm you or your plumbing.
